The Divided Indian Society: The Poor People

The present Indian society evolved through ages.Various social, economic cultural and religious factors have played significant role in molding and shaping its present condition. Though India may not have suffered largely in the economic recession, still the Indian society remains divided with clear-cut distinctions.

We may divide the modern Indian society into three divisions, upper, middle and lower classes and based on her economic factors. The interesting feature of this society is that though all these three classes co-exist side by side, the gulf between these three classes are widening day by day. In other words the differences between the haves and have-nots are on the increase as years roll by and the governments come and go. In the result, there is no social intercourse either between the upper and the lower classes and it is mostly confined among the people of a class inter se.

The lower class people are the poorest among the poor. It includes the lowest or meager income group besides those people who are living below the poverty line. Beggars, orphans, destitute, the uncared for aged people and other downtrodden people also belong to this category. The people of this category earn their meager income through daily wages or through casual labor and they are always struggling to have their both ends meet. Their lifestyle is very simple and restricted to the barest smallest and they even struggle hard to enjoy their basic amenities like food, dress and shelter. Most of them live in hamlets or slums and some of them in platforms. Hence, they even suffer from common diseases like leprosy, malaria, V.D and other infectious diseases. Above all these people do not have any other resources like movable or immovable properties to put by. They restrict their social intercourse among themselves. They do their family functions like marriage etc very simply incurring a minimum expenditure. Another interesting feature of this class is that because of their poverty they mostly stay illiterate; in the result they earn their wages mostly as laborers; a few people because of their poverty and illiteracy, even resort to antisocial activities like illicit drinking, cheating, pick-pocketing, stealing, smuggling, serving as henchmen, and gambling etc. In the result most of the people of this class remains immoral and caring a fig for virtues or good qualities. Hence, these people’s behavior is mostly rustic and they do not know good manners.Hence, they pay little respect for sacred social institutions like marriage and chastity etc.Above all, the people of this lower class care a fig for public opinion and they are least bothered about what other people say or think about them. Another characteristic feature of this class is that they always stay at the lowest ladder of the society and never come up in life. In rare cases, a few people, who belong to this class, by dint of their hard work, education and good habits come up in their life; but it does not in any way alter or change the general characteristics or the real face of this class.
